After a one-week layoff, the University of Minnesota Duluth returned to the race circuit Saturday morning and turned in a strong third-place showing among 22 schools at the 46th annual St. Olaf College Invitational in Northfield, Minn.
The Bulldogs, with 86 points, trailed only the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (40 points) and Michigan Tech University (79 points) in the team competition.
UMD placed three runners among the top 12 overall finishers including sophomore
Isaac Overmyer, who fifth with a time of 25:50.
Henry Jessen was next (8th place; 25:58) for the Bulldogs followed by fellow junior team captain
Cody Sedbrook (12th place; 26:11), junior
Grant Pulver (27th place; 26:44) and senior
Mitch Fisher (34th place; 26:59). A total of 290 competitors took part in the 8K race.
The Bulldogs, who occupied the No. 7 position in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Central Region Poll (its highest ranking ever during
Paul Nisius's seven years at the head coaching helm.), will be in Falcon Heights, Minn., next Saturday for the University of Minnesota's prestigious Roy Griak Invitational.
"I thought our guys ran well today and met the team goals that I had established for them," said Nisius. "This was an excellent preparation for us for next week's meet, which will include a number of nationally-ranked NCAA Division II teams."
