BULLDOGS MOVE TO 11-0 WITH SWEEP OF ST. CLOUD STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth continued its best start since 2013 by sweeping St. Cloud State University on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs swept their opponent for the eight straight time, dating back to the Ferris State Invitational to open up the season. With the victory, second-ranked UMD (11-0, 3-0 NSIC) has now won 25 consecutive sets, tying a streak of 25 from Sept. 13 to Oct. 4 of 2014.

Although the Bulldogs were not able to keep pace with their historic defensive pace of allowing opponents to hit just .071, UMD played solid defense by allowing St. Cloud State (5-6, 1-2 NSIC) to hit just .167 on the match. Sophomore outside hitter Makenzie Morgen picked up 15 kills to extend her team lead while also adding nine digs and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Taylor Wissbroecker flashed her skill on both sides of the ball, recording seven kills in addition to 10 digs. Also standing out was freshman setter Emily Torve, grabbing assists 44 times over the match, her second highest output of the season. Sophomore right side hitter Sarah Kelly made quite an impact as well, racking up nine kills on 14 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.

The Bulldogs were tested throughout each set, but were able to play to their potential as they would not drop a set to the Huskies. SCSU and UMD battled to a tie score of 21-21 in the opening set before the Bulldogs rallied for four straight points to grab an advantage in the match. The second set proved to be very similar, as the Bulldogs were not able to pull away until late in the set. After a being tied at 18, UMD's sophomore class decided to step up their game by running off the next six points for the set victory. Sophomore libero Erin Schindler tallied three service aces in those six points, while sophomores Kelly and Morgen grabbed additional points. UMD was continued on to hit .424 in the 25-21 third set victory, its most efficient offensive performance of the match.

The Bulldogs will look to continue their impressive start by returning to Duluth this weekend, hosting Upper Iowa University and No. 9 Winona State University. Opening serve against the Peacocks is schedule for 7 p.m. on Friday night, while the Bulldogs and Warriors will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
