BULLDOGS MAKE 2017 DEBUT AT SATURDAY'S MINNESOTA OPEN

The University of Minnesota Duluth ushered in 2017 Saturday at the University of Minnesota Open in Minneapolis, Minn., and among the highlights were a handful of Top 5 finishes.

Among those was senior Brian Lee, who placed second in the men's weight throw with an NCAA Division II-qualifying toss of 57'-03.00".  That effort also currently ranks first in the Northern Sun Intercolelgiate Conference. Sophomore Chris Timm (14'-00.75" in the pole vault), junior Clinton Treichel (49'-09.00" in the shot put -- invitational division) and senior Boston Braack (1:25.63 in the 600-meter run) all took fourth in their respective events while Darrick Jackson (1:26.82) finished 1.19 seconds and one spot back of Braack in the 600-meter run.

In the men's shot put open event, freshman Kenny Kirkvold, a UMD football lineman, came in first with a toss of 45'-09.75". Carlson and Jackson joined A.J. Belchak and senior Ben Hanson in the 4 x 400 relay where they came in fourth.

Up next for the Bulldogs is the University of Wisconsin-Superior's Twin Ports Invitational this Saturday (Jan. 21).
