After using the three-ball in the first half, the University of Minnesota Duluth played strong in the paint in the second half to overpower Wayne State College, 64-52.
The Bulldogs (12-8; 10-6 NSIC) connected on 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) three-pointers in the first half against the Wildcats (12-8; 10-6 NSIC). UMD held WSC to 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) shooting from beyond the arc throughout the game.
The Wildcats rounded out the first quarter on a 6-0 run to take an early 19-14 lead. Sophomore guard
Emma Boehm provided a spark coming off the bench for UMD, scoring six points on a pair of consecutive three-pointer, while grabbing three boards in the second quarter. In 24 minutes of work, Boehm would finish with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. The Bulldogs took a 31-29 into the second half before pulling away. Led by senior forward Taylor Meyer and junior forward
Anna Monke, the combo would be responsible for 25 of the 33 points scored in the second half for the Bulldogs. Meyer led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting.
It was a tale of two very different stories for each bench tonight. UMD garnered 14 points from its bench, compared to the WSC bench which was held scoreless.
The Bulldogs will head out on a four-game road trip starting with Minnesota State University (12-8; 8-8 NSIC) on Friday (Feb. 3) at 6 p.m. After starting the season 8-7, the Mavericks have gone 4-1 since and are riding a three-game win streak.
