UMD AND BEMIDJI STATE BOTH COME UP EMPTY IN SERIES FINALE

Nick Deery posted his first collegiate shut out Saturday night, but, unfortunately, not his second collegiate victory.

The University of Minnesota Duluth sophomore goaltender turned aside every shot he faced and so did his Bemidji State University counterpart, Michael Bitzer, as the two intrastate rivals played to a 0-0 overtime tie in their home-and-home series finale. It marked the first time UMD (1-2-1 overall) had been involved in a scoreless deadlock since March 3, 2007 (vs. the University of Wisconsin.

Deery, making his fourth career start, finished with 27 saves while Bitzer had 45 stops, including 11 in the first period when the Beavers were outshot 11-2. Bitzer backstopped Bemidji State to a 5-2 victory over the No. 5 Bulldogs Friday night with a 27-save performance in Bemidji, Minn.

"It was a good night for Nick," said UMD head coach Scott Sandelin. "He had a strong game and this should be a good building block for him."

UMD had five power play opportunities, including 61 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage at the end of the second period and beginning of the third, compared to three for the Beavers (1-0-1).

"Overall, I like our response tonight," said Sandelin. "Bemidji State is a good defensive team --they don't make things easy"

The Bulldogs will remain at AMSOIL Arena next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 20-21) to host Merrimack College in the first-ever series between the two teams.
