Trying to avenge its 2016 season-ending defeat to Augustana University in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament, the University of Minnesota Duluth fell short of its revenge suffering a 1-0 setback to the Vikings in Sioux Falls, S.D., Saturday afternoon in NSIC play. The Bulldogs (8-5-2, 5-5-2 NSIC) have dropped all their losing decisions by a goal this season. The Vikings (10-2-3, 9-1-2 NSIC) captured their 10th shutout of the season.
UMD was without five of its starters in the match, but the Bulldogs rose to the challenge seamlessly in the first half. UMD methodically weaved in-and-out of the Augustana defensive holds and outshot the VIkings 6-2 in the first 32 minutes of the match. Sophomore midfielder
Nan Glinsek had four shots on goal four times in the scoreless first half.
Augustana scored 94 seconds into the second half when Samantha Tymkowicz beat sophomore goalkeeper
Sisley Ng for her team-leading fifth goal. The Bulldogs responded with a flurry of chances shortly afterwards. Off a Viking corner, UMD cleared and rushed the other way. Junior forward
Madison Carey split the defenders on a through ball and had her shot attempt blocked for a corner. Off the corner, Carey had another chance but it was deflected away again with the goalie out of position. Glinsek hit a crossbar late, while
Destiny Schmitz got in behind the line as time expired, but the Vikings withstood UMD's offensive pressure to hold on for the 1-0 win.
UMD was one shot behind Augie in the final stat column, and Ng made three of the four shots she saw on goal. Freshman defender
Holly Kaboord made her first collegiate start filling in as a center back. Kaboord played all 90 minutes.
The last time the Bulldogs defeated the Vikings was in the first round of the NSIC tournament in 2014 when
Kailey Beatt found paydirt in the 1-0 blanking of Augustana. The Vikings trail UMD in the all-time series 11-7-2. Head coach
Greg Cane remains one win shy of the elusive 250-win plateau. With a victory tomorrow, Cane will become the 13th head coach at UMD to gather 250 wins in any sport.
The Bulldogs return to the field tomorrow afternoon when they engage in another NSIC tilt with Wayne State College. First kick of that matchup in Wayne, Neb., is schedule for 1:00 p.m.
