A 90-minute delay -- due to a power outage in parts of Orono, Maine -- to the start of the University of Minnesota Duluth's first road series of 2016-17 may have had the a few Bulldogs like
Riley Tufte chomping at the bit.
Once electricity was fully restored and the puck finally dropped, the sophomore left winger wasted little time in flexing his scoring muscle, striking 46 seconds in and jump starting No. 10 UMD to a 2-1 non-conference win over the University of Maine. Sophomore goaltender
Hunter Shepard stopped 26 of 27 Maine shots, including a dozen in the final period of play, while sophomore
Jade Miller potted the go-ahead goal (his first game winner as a Bulldog) with 8:57 remaining in regulation.
The Bulldogs, who extended their unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2) with their second consecutive victory, are now 3-2-2 on the year. Maine, which was hosting UMD for the first time in 30 years, dropped to 2-3-0 overall.
Tufte's goal, his fourth of the year which came off a turnover and then a feed from center right winger
Karson Kuhlman, held up until the 9:26 of the third period when Eduards Traimaks snuck a shot through traffic to end Shepard's bid for a first career shut out. Miller responded 97 seconds later by taking a pass from junior right winger
Billy Exell, bursting past a Maine defender and then deking Black Bear goaltender Rob McGovern.
The game took just 2:08 to complete as the two teams combined for three penalties (three of which were assessed to UMD). For the seventh time in as many games this season, UMD outshot its opposition, this time holding a slim 29-27 edge over the Black Bears.
The series finale is set for Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Maine's Alfond Arena.
