BULLDOGS NIPS ST. CLOUD STATE 3-2 IN OVERTIME

University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey head coach Maura Crowell just wanted her team to win Friday night, and the Bulldogs delivered.

UMD needed just 2:40 of overtime to nip St. Cloud State University 3-2 at AMSOIL Arena.  The win makes two for the Bulldogs in their last three Western Collegiate Hockey Association games, and sends UMD into sole possession of fourth place in the nation's toughest league.

"We got the win, that's what we wanted," said Crowell.  "The league is a dogfight, and after Wisconsin, it's any team's league and every point we can get is critical.  To get the win, whether it's in the first 60 minutes or the overtime, we are very happy to have it."

Bulldog rookie forward Ashton Bell opened the scoring just 3:12 into the first period.  Bell walked in alone and went five-hole for her fifth goal of the season to give UMD the 1-0 lead.  St. Cloud State answered a little over a minute and a half later on a goal by Dana Rasmussen, and the two squads took a 1-1 tie into the first intermission.

The Huskies went up 2-1 at 12:10 of the second period on a shot by Alyssa Erickson that deflected off a UMD skate and fluttered up and over Bulldog goaltender Jessica Convery.  Michelle Lowenhielm delivered the Bulldogs response, and drew the game even with a rip from the right point that beat SCSU netminder Janine Alder low to her glove side.  Lowehielm, who converted from the frontline to the blueline on the line chart for the game, was assisted by Jessica Healey and Bell.

The third period was scoreless despite an onslaught of offense by the Bulldogs, who outshot the Huskies 14-4 in the final stanza.

UMD's reward for outshooting SCSU 35-23 in the contest would come at 2:40 of extra time.  Freshmen Naomi Rogge possessed into the Huskies zone and dropped the puck back to Katerina Mrázová, who ended the game with a quick wrist shot for her first goal of the season.

Convery finished the outing with 21 saves, while Alder had 32 for the Huskies, who fall to 2-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in WCHA action.

UMD (4-7-0, 2-5-0) will try and make a sweep of it tomorrow afternoon when the puck drops at AMSOIL at 4:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  Freshmen Naomi Rogge has now logged a point in her last three skates (2g, 1a), and leads UMD in scoring with four goals and five assists for nine points … both Rogge and Ashton Bell lead the Bulldogs with five goals.
