Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

UMD DONE IN BY ST. CLOUD STATE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT NIGHT

Twenty two times opponents had tried to take down the University of Minnesota Duluth twice in a weekend series and 22 times they failed.

No. 2 St. Cloud State University finally broke that impressive run by toppling the No. 8 Bulldogs 5-0 Saturday afternoon to complete a sweep of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference series at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The unbeaten Huskies (7-0-0) became the first club to not only sweep the Bulldogs since the University of North Dakota did it back on Feb. 19-20, 2016, but also the first to shutout UMD in its own building in three seasons (University of Denver on March 14, 2015).

Despite having five of its regulars out while nursing injuries, UMD still managed to outshoot the Huskies 29-26, but were unable to get anything past rookie goaltender David Hrenak. St. Cloud State, on the other hand, took advantage of it two first-period power play opportunities to take a 2-0 lead after the first period. It then added a shorthanded goal, only the second allowed by the Bulldogs in the last 75 games -- midway through the second period before tacking on two more scores before the second intermission. The first of those, which came at the 13:16 mark, ended the night for starting UMD goaltender Hunter Shepard, who stopped 11 of 15 shots. Fellow sophomore Nick Deery allowed one goal on 11 shots the rest of the way.

"We got a lot of guys experience and we learned another lesson this weekend," said UMD Head Coach Scott Sandelin. "For a lot of our players it was their first time against a really good team in a tough building so hopefully they got some good experience out of it and its a good learning process for all of us."

UMD will return to AMSOIL Arena this Friday to open up a two-game NCHC set against Western Michigan University, which is coming off a two-game weekend sweep of No. 1 Denver.
