A trio of sophomores helped the University of Minnesota Duluth snap the five-game winning streak of Northern Michigan University on Tuesday after an 87-82 win at Romano Gymnasium.
Logan Rohrscheib,
Luke Harris and
Brandon Myer combined for 66 points as the Bulldogs claimed its first victory at home since Jan. 3, 2016, kicking to the side a six-game home skid. Rohrscheib had 21 points with 12 of those coming at the charity stripe. Harris shot 50 percent from the field adding 13 points on top of his six rebounds. Myer led the way, continuing to be a driving force for UMD knocking down a career-high 32 points on 10-of-15 from the floor and 10-of-11 at the line.
The Bulldogs (3-7) have had its struggles again this season but are starting to turn the corner. A team consisting of four starting sophomores, UMD is one win away from equaling its total from a season ago. Relying on the underclassmen so far this season, they accounted for 69 percent of the team's points and stepped up once again today. The youthful Bulldogs outscored its opponents in the second half for only the third time as the inexperienced squad is still learning to close out games like they did tonight.
The Bulldogs shot 48 percent overall while holding the Wildcats to 45 percent. NMU had 16 more shot attempts but didn't get to the line nearly enough as their counterparts.
Northern Michigan (8-4) got into foul trouble early and had five players with four or more fouls. UMD got to the line 45 times tonight almost reaching the program record of 48 set back on Nov. 30, 1998. As a team, it made 35 of its 45 attempts, which was one short of tying the school record also set on Nov. 30, 1998 against the University of Minnesota Crookston. Rohrscheib, the native of Eau Claire, Wis., missed one of his 13 shots at the line and Myer also had one miss as the duo nailed 22 free throws.
The Wildcats erased the Bulldogs' biggest lead of the night of seven in the first half to tie the game at 39 heading into the half. NMU slowly turned the game into their favor and led by as much of six with a little over nine minutes to go. That's when UMD mounted its comeback. The Wildcats got foul happy and put the Bulldogs into the double bonus for the rest of the game. UMD hit six of its eight shots in the last nine minutes and got to the line 16 times, making 13. Rohrscheib had 12 of his 21 points during that span.
Myer, one game removed from setting his career high at St. Cloud State University, bested his mark with 32 and has led the team in scoring three straight nights. During that span, the Superior, Wis., native is 29-for-43, knocking down a robust 67 percent of his looks. He collected back-to-back 30-point efforts for the Bulldogs since Ryan Rasmussen posted 30 and 32 back on Jan. 20-21, 2012. Myer also tabbed a game-high 13 rebounds marking his second double-double of the season, still the only Bulldog to have a double-double on the year.
Sophomore guard
Trevor Entwisle led all players with 4 assists as he continues to be the main distributor for the Bulldogs. The Neenah, Wis., native now had at least three assists in the last five games. The Wildcats had four players on double figures including Isaiah Johnson who had a team-high 18 points.
UMD will enjoy a 11-day break from the court before it regroups in Bismarck, N.D. to battle the University of Mary on Saturday, Dec. 30. First tip is slated for 6:00 p.m.
