The Bulldogs shortened bench finally had its effect on Sunday afternoon.
Less than 22 hours after earning a 1-1 draw with the No. 1 University of Wisconsin, the No. 2 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team just ran low on fuel against the Badgers in a 8-0 setback at a sold-out LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wisc. Â The loss is the first by the Bulldogs since Dec. 10, and over that span, UMD ran up a tab of 7-0-2, including going 2-0-1 against teams ranked in the top-two until Sunday.
Wisconsin picked up two first period goals in the last five minutes of the stanza to take a 2-0 lead af the first intermission.  The Badgers used four second period goals to handcuff the Bulldogs, including three with less than five minutes remaining in the second period for a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes.  Baylee Wellhausen had a hat trick for Wisconsin, and Annie Pankowski added two goals in the final period of play.

Maddie Rooney made 34 saves in 44:03 of action, while rookie
Catherine Johnson had six stops in 15:57. Â The Badgers outshot the Bulldogs 48-15 in the game, and netted two power play goals in three attempts. Â UMD was scoreless in three attempts.
The Bulldogs (20-5-5, 17-5-4) will head back to AMSOIL Arena next weekend to host St. Cloud State University in their final regular season Western Collegiate Hockey Association action of the year. Â Friday's game will get underway at 7:07 p.m., with Saturday's following at 4:07 p.m.Â
