TOP-RANKED WISCONSIN OVERPOWERS NO. 2 BULLDOGS 8-0

The Bulldogs shortened bench finally had its effect on Sunday afternoon.

Less than 22 hours after earning a 1-1 draw with the No. 1 University of Wisconsin, the No. 2 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team just ran low on fuel against the Badgers in a 8-0 setback at a sold-out LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wisc.  The loss is the first by the Bulldogs since Dec. 10, and over that span, UMD ran up a tab of 7-0-2, including going 2-0-1 against teams ranked in the top-two until Sunday.

Wisconsin picked up two first period goals in the last five minutes of the stanza to take a 2-0 lead af the first intermission.  The Badgers used four second period goals to handcuff the Bulldogs, including three with less than five minutes remaining in the second period for a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes.  Baylee Wellhausen had a hat trick for Wisconsin, and Annie Pankowski added two goals in the final period of play.

UMD goaltender Maddie Rooney made 34 saves in 44:03 of action, while rookie Catherine Johnson had six stops in 15:57.  The Badgers outshot the Bulldogs 48-15 in the game, and netted two power play goals in three attempts.  UMD was scoreless in three attempts.

The Bulldogs (20-5-5, 17-5-4) will head back to AMSOIL Arena next weekend to host St. Cloud State University in their final regular season Western Collegiate Hockey Association action of the year.  Friday's game will get underway at 7:07 p.m., with Saturday's following at 4:07 p.m.
