MSU MOORHEAD HOLDS OFF LATE PUSH BY BULLDOGS TO CAP OFF REGULAR SEASON

Sophomore guard Cody Tomlinson scored a game-high 19 points for the University of Minnesota Duluth, but No. 21 Minnesota State University, Moorhead always found an answer down the stretch to knock off the Bulldogs.

Tomlinson shot 6-of-14 from the field and knocked down three shots from long-range while adding six rebounds. Freshman guard Logan Rohrscheib was the only other UMD player to notch double-digit points, picking up 10 points and four rebounds. Forward Charles Benson, the lone Bulldog senior, led the team in rebounds with eight and added four points on Senior Night.

Neither team found their stroke from the field, with UMD shooting 30.9 percent as opposed to the Dragons' 35.7 percent. The Bulldog defense was able to contain the top-scoring Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference offense to just 62 points -- 28 points under their scoring average.

After jumping out to a 4-2 lead just over three minutes into the game, MSU Moorhead gained an advantage and held the lead until the 7:22 mark, when Tomlinson converted an and-one to even the score at 18. In the final two minutes of the first half, UMD rattled off an 8-2 run to take a 32-29 following a pair of free throws from junior guard Kyle Schalow, taking a 32-29 lead into halftime.

The Dragons grabbed their largest advantage of the game at 46-37 with 8:18 to play in the second half, but the Bulldogs rallied back, scoring six straight points to cut the deficit to three points. Minutes later, freshman forward Brandon Myer knocked down a three-pointer off a feed from Schalow, bringing UMD within two points with five minutes to play. As MSU Moorhead did on multiple occasions, the Dragons answered with a three-pointer of their own on the ensuing possession to cut down the Bulldog momentum. UMD trailed by just four points, 58-54 with 48 seconds to play, but MSUM capitalized on its free throw opportunities down the stretch to leave Romano Gymnasium with a 62-56 victory.

The Bulldogs will turn their attention to the NSIC Tournament, beginning on Wednesday with a matchup against Southwest Minnesota State University.
