UMD'S SANDELIN A FINALIST FOR 2016-17 SPENCER PENROSE AWARD

University of Minnesota Duluth head coach Scott Sandelin is one of 10 finalists for the American Hockey Coaches Association's Spencer Penrose Award, which is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Coach of the Year.

Sandelin, who was the recipient of this prestigious award in 2004 and the runnerup six years ago, has directed his Bulldogs to their fifth berth ever in the NCAA Frozen Four, the NCAA West Regional title, the program's first National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff championship, and the team's best regular season finish (second place) in their four years of membership in the NCHC.  In addition, UMD also has been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com Poll a school-record 11 times during the course of the 2016-17 season and reigned as champions at the final North Star College Cup. UMD sports a 27-6-7 overall record for a .762 win percentage -- its best mark since going 36-9-3 (.781) back in 1984-85. The 27 victories as well as the .762 winning percentage both rank third among all NCAA schools. Now winding down his 17th season behind the Bulldog bench, Sandelin was a finalist for the 2016-17 NCHC Herb Brooks Coach of the Year Award as well.

The Spencer Penrose Award voting will be conducted prior to next week's NCAA Frozen Four in Chicago, and the winner will be announced on April 5.
