Three 2017-18 University of Minnesota Duluth rookies -- defensemen Dylan Samberg and Mikey Anderson and winger Nick Swaney -- were selected in the 2017 National Hockey League Draft, which wrapped up today in Chicago, Ill.
Samberg, who wrapped up his prep play career this past winter at Hermantown High School, was taken in the second round (43rd overall) by the Winnipeg Jets while Mikey Anderson, a member of the United States Hockey League's Waterloo Blackhawks in 2016-17, went in the fourth round (103rd overall) to the Los Angeles Kings. Anderson's older brother, Bulldog sophomore winger
Joey Anderson, was a third round pick (73rd overall; New Jersey Devils) in last year's draft.
Swaney, who was Anderson's teammate in Waterloo, was chosen in the 7th -- and final -- round by the Minnesota Wild (209th overall).
That trio, along with
Joey Anderson, sophomore winger
Riley Tufte (Dallas; 2016) and senior center
Avery Peterson (Minnesota, 2013) comprise UMD's current list of NHL draftees.
The last time UMD has three or more of its players taken in the same NHL Draft was in 2010 when right winger Joe Basaraba (Florida), defenseman Justin Faulk (Carolina) and center Caleb Herbert (Washington) were plucked.
