BULLDOGS SLAY DRAGONS TO GET BACK ON TRACK

The goal by senior forward Skye Finley proved to be the deciding factor Friday afternoon in Moorhead, Minn., in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. The University of Minnesota Duluth conquered a 2-1 victory over Minnesota State University-Moorhead to end their short-lived two game winless streak.

Finley, the conference's third leading scorer coming into Friday, started the charge on a breakaway in the 77th minute. Finley led junior Lizzy Fontes who had the open field between her the goalkeeper. Fontes tried to go to the far post and was denied but Finley buried the rebound to put the Bulldogs ahead with 13-plus minutes remaining. The UMD defense was stout down the stretch closing out the victory. Junior goalie Sisley Ng made five saves for her fourth victory of the year.

On an abnormally warm September day, it was as even as you could play through 45 minutes. Both squads knocked in a goal and each collected five shots on goal on seven total attempts. The Dragons' Jessica Dallman netted the game's first marker in the 11th minute on a cross that found her right foot. The Bulldogs responded quickly to even things at one.

UMD methodically traveled down the pitch and struck when the opportunity was ripe. Sophomore midfielder Emily Hinz positioned herself on the opposite end of the play and went in unnoticed behind the defense when junior midfielder Laura Edgren struck the ball over the defenders to her follow teammate. Hinz smacked the ball into net past the keeper. The St. Louis Park, Minn., native has notched five points in the last two games including what was her first collegiate points against Concordia-St. Paul last Sunday.

The Bulldogs return to the Malosky Stadium pitch Sunday for an NSIC engagement Northern State University. St. Cloud State University took out the Wolves this afternoon. The contest between UMD and NSU will begin at 1:00 p.m.
