There would be no magical comeback tonight, as the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team dropped its first road game of the season 2-1 to Winona State University.
Despite a 17-11 shot advantage, the Warriors (4-4-1; 3-2-1 NSIC) held off the Bulldogs' (6-2-1; 3-2-1 NSIC) offensive attack long enough to come away with the win and three points at the Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium in Winona, Minn.
Sophomore forward Courtney Wiencek converted off a corner kick by heading in the first goal of the game at 10:35. It would be just the sixth goal scored on UMD up to that point in the season, but only the fourth given up in the first half. Trailing early in the second half, junior forward
Natalie St. Martin picked up the ball of the right side of the pitch and passed to sophomore midfielder
Nan Glinsek who had just slipped past the Warriors' backline. Glinsek turned and saw an open junior forward
Destiny Schmitz on the left side of the box. Schmitz received the pass from Glinsek, took it to the right side of the goal and hammered a ball into the far left corner at 57:57 to knot things up. Schmitz has now had back-to-back games garnering points for the first time in her collegiate career.
But the tie would only remain for just over 10 minutes, as WSU put the game away at 68:00. Freshman midfielder Melissa Greco collected the rebound off a corner kick and put it in the back of the net. After the goal, the Bulldogs would get off five more shots, but were unable to convert on any of them as time ran out. Heading into the matchup, UMD had outscored its opponents 12-1 in the second half and have had all six of its game-winners come from the final 45 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs will head to Fayette, Iowa next to take on the Upper Iowa University (1-6-1; 1-4-1 NSIC). The Peacocks will ride into the match on a three game losing skid including dropping a 3-0 decision to St. Cloud State University Friday afternoon. First kick at Pattison Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
