That's exactly how you draw it up. No really, that's how the University of Minnesota Duluth drew it up on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of goals in the second half on set pieces versus Northern Michigan University. Junior defender
Laura Edgren lofted back-to-back corner kicks in the 71st and 72nd minutes to give UMD a 2-0 victory over NMU (0-3).That shutout puts the Bulldogs at 2-0 for the first time since 2005 when they defeated Truman State University and Southwest Minnesota State University to open the season. The Bulldogs now lead the series 14-4-3 over the Wildcats.
"We played extremely well," said head coach
Greg Cane. "They did a good job defensively of clogging up the middle and denying everything in front of them. We prepped for this and we stayed with our positive vibe. Those set plays were carbon-copies of one another and they were executed to perfection."
Consistent pressure applied through much of the match tilted the field in favor of the Bulldogs.Junior goalkeeper
Carlye Wright made her first start of season and saw almost no action. Wright, the North Oaks, Minn. native, made only one save on the afternoon. In fact, the suffocating defense didn't allow a single shot in the first half of play. The last time UMD didn't give up a shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes was on Oct. 23, 2016 against Minnesota State University, Moorhead.
The Wildcats defensive barrier broke when Edgren placed her corner on the back post right where senior forward
Skye Finley was located to redirect the ball into the net. A mere 74 seconds later, Edgren did the same exact thing as her kick swerved this time into the net untouched. Edgren, the St. Louis Park, Minn. native, is already halfway to matching her collegiate scoring output. She compiled six points in her first two seasons as a Bulldog.
UMD blew a major opportunity to strike earlier. Finley and junior forward
Natalie St. Martin, who was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offense Player of the Week last Tuesday, both barely missed on a set play in the 21st minute. Sophomore forward
Logan Nash faked one way opening up the wall for Finley who drilled the outside post. St. Martin was the first to corral the ball and sent it up over the net.
Today's match also provided the opportunity for freshmen
Gabby Bland (redshirt),
Jenna Eichten, and
Holly Kaboord to see their first-ever collegiate action.
The Bulldogs wrap up their two-game road series in Michigan with a clash against Michigan Technological University Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
