The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team came up just short in overtime, 84-83, to No. 22 Northern State University on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs (11-6; 8-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) have now dropped two straight at home after having previously won their first six to start the season.
UMD took a two point lead into halftime against NSU (16-4; 11-3 NSIC) thanks in large part to its three-point game. Junior guard
Emma Boehm and sophomore guard
Taylor Schneider each connected on a pair of three's in the first half to help led the Bulldogs to a collective 6-for-13 (46.2 percent) from beyond the arc. Boehm led UMD with eight points on 3-for-6 shooting while notching three rebounds, two assists and added a steal in the first 20 minutes of play. The Bulldogs built a seven point lead in the first six minutes of the game, but would see a 14-7 advantage turn into a 18-16 deficit in a matter of 1:24. That seven point lead would be the largest by either squad as 11 lead changes would unfold over the course of the of the afternoon.
No. 22 NSU showed again why its one of the top rebounding teams in the nation by out-rebounding UMD 47-27, including finishing with a 14-7 advantage with offensive rebounds. Coming into the weekend, the Dragons led the NSIC in all rebounding categories and led all of Division II in rebounding margin, out-rebounding teams by 13.4. They were sixth in total rebounds and averaged 44.5 boards a game, good for 19th in the country.

Ann Simonet garnered herself a career-night by collecting career-highs with 18 points off 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) shooting, six assists, six rebounds, and four three-pointers (4-for-6). Six UMD players reached double-digits including Simonet, freshman forward

Katie Stark (12), Boehm (12), and junior guard
Sammy Kozlowski (10).
The Bulldogs will hit the road for two matchups before returning for a five-game home stand. UMD first will face-off against No. 11 Augustana University (17-1; 13-1 NSIC) on Friday (Jan. 26) at 6 p.m. The Vikings remain unbeaten at home (9-0) this season, and have yet to drop a game to an opponent in the NSIC South division (10-0).
UMD will then head to Wayne, Neb., to take on Wayne State College (16-6; 10-4 NSIC) on Saturday (Jan. 27) at 4 p.m. The Cougars rank in the top three in the NSIC in scoring, field goal percentage, and three-point FG percentage.
