The nation's third-longest unbeaten streak is no more.
Minnesota State University-Mankato saw to that on Tuesday night at the Verizon Center where the host Mavericks clipped the University of Minnesota Duluth 1-0 in its final non-conference activity of the season. The loss was the Bulldogs' first since Dec. 8 and ended a 6-0-1 run as well as a four-game winning streak.
Parker Tuomie's one-timer from the low slot with 2:36 to go in the second period was all the scoring the two intrastate rivals could muster as they combined to put just 39 shots on net the entire night. UMD generated its lowest single-game shot total (15) since Jan. 11, 2014. Connor LaCouvee made 15 saves on his way to becoming the first Maverick to ever shut out UMD. Those 15 saves were the fewest any opposition goalie has ever had to make in posting a shutout win over the Bulldogs (dating back to when the program elevated to NCAA Division I in 1964-65). Sophomore
Hunter Shepard, making his 21st consecutive start, had 23 stops for the No. 9 Bulldogs.
UMD (13-10-3 overall), which had converted on 51.9 percent of its power plays over the the previous seven games (14 of 27), was blanked on four man advantage opportunities while No. 7 Minnesota State (19-7-0) went 0-for-5. The Mavericks came into the night ranking first nationally in power play efficiency.
The Bulldogs will return to National Collegiate Hockey Conference warfare this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 26-27) with a pair of home bouts against No. 5 St. Cloud State University.
