Patrick Newell gave St. Cloud State University its first lead of the weekend with 5:10 to go in the third period and the Huskies didn't give it up, holding on for a hard-fought 2-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday night.
A standing-room only AMSOIL Arena crowd of 7,149 saw UMD's school-record six-game NCHC victory streak come to a end as the No. 9 Bulldogs fell to 14-11-3 overall and 8-8-0-0 in the NCHC. No. 5 St. St. Cloud State, which fell 5-1 to the Bulldogs in Friday's series opener, is now 15-6-3 in all games and 9-4-1-0 in NCHC.
Freshman left winger
Nick Swaney banged in a rebound from freshman defensman
Matt Anderson's shot to put UMD up 1-0 at 8:24 of the first period, but the Huskies answered 1:36 later. The two teams combined for just 11 shots in the opening 20 minutes with the Huskies, who had three power play opportunities during that stretch, having seven of those. St. Cloud State outshot the Bulldogs 13-4 in a scoreless second period before UMD turned the tables in the final period (12-8).
The Huskies went 0-for-5 on the power play as the Bulldogs have now held the opposition scoreless on their last 21 man advantage chances. UMD went on the power play just once the entire night.
The Bulldogs, who received a solid 26-save performance from sophomore goaltender
Hunter Shepard, will hit the road for a pair of NCHC bouts with league-leading Denver next Friday and Saturday.
"I'm proud of our team, but we looked a little bit tired," said UMD head coach
Scott Sandelin. "The guys battled, the penalty killers did great and Shep (
Hunter Shepard) played well."
