Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Kelly Grgas Wheeler

BULLDOGS DEFEAT KOREAN NATIONAL TEAM 3-0

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team did its part Friday night at AMSOIL Arena to help prepare the Korean National Team — along with head coach Sarah Murray — for the 2018 Winter Games.

The Bulldogs outscored Korea 3-0 and controlled the game from the first face-off, but Korean goaltender So Jung Shin looked every bit Olympic in a 36 save effort that helped fend off a UMD squad that outshot Korea 39-16.

With a goal in each period, the game was never seriously in doubt for the Bulldogs.  Freshman forward Anna Klein walked in and around Jung Shin at the 5:40 mark of the first period to open UMD's scoring.

Emma Yanko doubled that lead at 8:50 of the second period, finishing off a give-and-go with Katerina Mrázová in Yanko's typical composure, and Mallorie Iozzo capped off the night with a goal of her own 14:57 into the third period.

All three UMD goaltenders manned the pipes for a period, with both Catherine Johnson and Hanna Markel making six stops, while Jessica Convery made four saves as the games starter.

Murray played for the Bulldogs from 2007-2010 and won two NCAA titles, but never skated on AMSOIL's ice as a player.  With just a handful of games left to prepare for the pressures of hosting the Winter Games, Murray and Korea will end their current tour Jan. 11 to head back to Korea.  Korea will face Switzerland — and former UMD All-American Lara Stalder — on Feb, 10.

The Bulldogs will host the Minnesota Whitecaps tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at AMSOIL.
