The University of Minnesota Duluth's lengthy winning streak over the University of Minnesota is now a lengthy unbeaten streak.

The No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA champion Bulldogs, who came into Saturday night having won a program-best eight straight over their long-time rivals, rallied for 1-1 overtime tie with the No. 13 Gophers in front of the third largest home crowd (7,362) in UMDÂ history. The night began with a rousing pre-game unveiling of the Bulldogs' 2017-18 NCAA championship banner.
Minnesota's Sampo Ranta scored on wrister from between the faceoff circles 12:07 into the first period and that 1-0 lead held up until the 3:38 mark of the third period when senior center
Peter Krieger banged in a rebound (from sophomore right winger
Kobe Roth's shot). That power play goal concluded the scoring as both goaltenders -- UMD junior
Hunter Shepard and Minnesota Mat Robson -- were stellar. Shepard, making his 40th consecutive start, finished with 27 saves while Robson made 27 stops.
"I thought we got better as the game went on," said UMD Head Coach
Scott Sandelin. "We vcertainly had chances that we needed to bear down on, but I thought both teams had some good moments. I thought it was a pretty good game for an opener given the fact that we haven't had a true practice yet."
UMD went 1-for-5 on the power play and held the Minnesota scoreless on both of its opportunities with the extra man.

The two teams will close out the home-and-home series in Minneapolis on Sunday night when they meet for the 234th time.
