The University Duluth beat up on the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the latest border battle. The Bulldogs went up big early and went on to win 85-45 to improve to 2-1 early in the season. UMD led almost wire-to-wire as it trailed after the Yellowjackets converted a three-pointer on their first basket to take a brief 3-2 lead. Senior forward
Sean Burns laid in a bucket and the Bulldogs led for the final 38:17 of the game.
The 45 points allowed was the fewest allowed since the University of Minnesota Crookston could only muster 44 points on Dec. 10, 2010.
UMD, similar to their season opener, connected on 62 percent of its attempts. It made 30 of its 48 shots and nine of its 19 three-point looks. Wisconsin-Superior had 18 baskets and hit on 39 percent of its shots. The Yellowjackets struggled with the up-tempo and in-your-face defense. They committed 19 turnovers which the Bulldogs turned into 30 points. UMD outscored UWS 30-6 in that category and was primary factor in the Bulldogs' 40-point victory.
Junior forward
Brandon Myer's return to his hometown was quite the showing. Myer went off for a game-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting with six rebounds, a career high six steals, and two assists in 25 minutes.
Eleven UMD players scored in the game. Burns was second in the scoring department with 13 points. Redshirt freshman
Jimmy Vollbrecht made his first collegiate bucket in his first appearance in a Bulldog uniform. Vollbrecht scored four points in three minutes. Sophomore guard
Xavier Cummings dropped nine points off the bench to lead all non-starters.
Ronny Galvan was the lone Yellowjacket to reach double figures. Galvan went 5-for-9 for 11 points.
The Bulldogs return home on Sunday, Nov. 18 to play Michigan Tech University in their last non-conference contest before the start of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference slate.
