NORTHERN STATE KNOCKS OFF UMD 57-44 BEHIND CONRAD'S 20 POINTS

The last time the University of Minnesota Duluth and Northern State University squared off it went down to wire with the Bulldogs falling by one in overtime. The Wolves made sure that UMD wouldn't have another chance to pull off the upset of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division leader.

Northern State's Jill Conrad tied her season-high with 20 points to help the Wolves to a 57-44 victory over the Bulldogs. Conrad was 8-of-10 and 2-for-2 behind the three-point line. She also had nine rebounds, four on the offensive end.

UMD was held to a season low on the evening and its lowest total since Michigan Tech University kept the Bulldogs to 43 points back on Nov.14, 2015.

Northern State (23-4; 18-3 NSIC) controlled the glass throughout the game winning the battle 44-28. Fourteen of its 44 boards came on the offensive end and halted any comeback charge as they killed much of the clock especially in the second half.

The Bulldogs (15-10; 12-9) struggled out of the gates. They shot 1-for-9 to start the game but luckily trailed only 9-2. The defense held its ground as the offense found their footing. Freshman guard Ann Simonet had five consecutive points during a 10-2 run which gave UMD an 11-10 lead. The Wolves went scoreless for 6:50 during that timeframe. Northern State closed the half on a 10-2 in the final 5:44 to head to the break up 23-16.

The 39 first-half points was the lowest scoring half all season as the Bulldogs shot 26.9 percent and the Wolves went 32.1 percent from the field.

Junior forward Katie Stark knocked down back-to-back treys as UMD went 3-for-4 to open the second half but weren't able to cut into the Northern State lead. Instead, the Wolves hit three consecutive threes to extend their lead to 14.

The Bulldogs couldn't cut the lead down to more nine points as Northern State knocked down key open looks after getting out of multiple double teams. The 57 points was tied for a season low for the Wolves.

Stark finished with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Simonet had eight points, five rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Freshman forward Sarah Grow added six points and nine rebounds in the loss.

UMD ends the regular season at Minnesota State University-Moorhead tomorrow with the first tip at 4:00 p.m. The Dragons defeated the Bulldogs 81-45 at Romano Gymnasium back on Jan. 19, 2017.
