The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team ended its regular season with a 71-67 loss to Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Saturday evening.
The Bulldogs (11-17; 7-15 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) were unable to withstand a Dragons' attack as they dropped their second straight heading into the NSIC tournament. Moorhead ended its six-game losing skid in a game in which it lead for all but five minutes.
The Bulldogs kept things close in the first half, shooting 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) for 34 points. Junior forward
Ryan Kaczynski and freshman forward
Jake Paper combined for 6-of-6 for 12 points in the first half. Kaczynski would finish with 12 points, three rebounds and an assist.Â
With 13:01 left, junior guard
Mamadou Ngom laid one in to tie the game at 45-45. Following the layup, Moorhead ripped off a 19-7 run over the next 7:31 to go up 64-52 and effectively put the game out of reach for UMD.
Sophomore forward
Brandon Myer finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards and a team-high 16 points. Myer had four double-double this season. Sophomore guard Johnny Beeninga scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting, as well at 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. The Dragons shot a combined 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) from three in the game.Â
The Bulldogs finish in fifth place in the NSIC North division standings, and will take on the No. 4 seed of the NSICÂ South Winona State University on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
