UMD, WHITECAPS FIT TO BE TIED IN EXHIBITION REMATCH

In the third and final exhibition contest of the season between the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team and the Minnesota Whitecaps at AMSOIL Arena, the skate ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Bulldogs got two goals from sophomore forward Sydney Brodt, but despite outshooting the Whitecaps a whopping 20-6 in the final 25 minutes of play, UMD couldn't cash in another chip on MWC goaltender Julie Friend.  UMD defeated the Whitecaps twice this season by scores of 4-1 on Sept. 23, and most recently 7-2 back on Jan. 6.

Brodt netted one of her two goals 16:44 into the first period, a wrist shot from the low slot that handed UMD a 1-0 lead.

The second period was more suited to the Whitecaps, who skated back into the flow of the game with a goal at 9:07 and then 15:32 to grab the 2-1 advantage.  Just 23 seconds into the third period, however, Brodt equalized on her own rebound off the post to make it a 2-2 contest.  From there, UMD shelled the Whitecaps 15-5 in the third period and 5-1 in extra time, but it was to no avail for the Bulldogs.

UMD did prevail in the ensuing shootout. Senior defenseman Michelle Lowenhielm netted the first attempt of the game (as she did Wednesday against St. Cloud State University), and senior forward Katerina Mrázová iced it as UMD's third shooter to make it a 2-0 triumph.  Catherine Johnson, who had six saves in the 25 minutes she was in between the pipes, turned away both Whitecap shooters she faced during the shootout.  Jessica Convery had six saves for UMD in the opening period, while rookie Hanna Markel had a team-high 14 in the second period.

The Bulldogs will host the current No. 1 University of Wisconsin — who was swept by No. 6 Ohio State University — next weekend at AMSOIL at 7:07 p.m. Friday for 'Cram the Am', and again Saturday at 4:07 p.m. for UMD's annual senior night.
