MAVERICKS WITHSTAND BULLDOG SHOT BARRAGE IN SERIES-OPENING WIN

There were plenty of shots, but not a whole of goals.

The University of Minnesota Duluth attempted a season-high 83 shots, put 42 of those on net, but managed to get just one past University of Nebraska Omaha goaltender Evan Weninger in a 4-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference setback Friday at AMSOIL Arena.

The No. 7 Bulldogs, who had won four straight coming into tonight, fell to 18-14-3 overall and 12-11-0-0 NCHC -- guaranteeing them third place in the final league standings. No. 14 Omaha, which was just 1-5-0 in its last six outings, is 17-14-2 and 10-12-1-0.

For the 23rd time in 35 games this season, UMD jumped to a 1-0 lead as sophomore right winger Joey Anderson tapped in a loose puck for his eighth goal of the year just 3:24 into the opening period. The Mavericks answered three minutes later and then struck once in the second period (on the power play) and twice in the third (including an empty-netter with .9 seconds left).

UMD finished with a 42-28 shot advantage while losing to the Mavericks for just the third time in 11 lifetime matchups at AMSOIL Arena (3-5-3). Sophomore goaltender Hunter Shepard, in his 30th straight start, took the loss for UMD.

"We didn't play hard enough or with enough urgency and compete level you need to play with this time of year," said UMD Head Coach Scott Sandelin. "Obviously we did have some scoring chances, but you have to bear down because you don't get many Grade A chances."

The two clubs will close out the 2017-18 regular season tomorrow night.
