The University of Minnesota Duluth split with Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn., on Monday. The Bulldogs loss the first game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference double header before rebounding in the rematch.
Â
SMSU's Kaylee Hentges scored the game's opening run after coming home on a suicide squeeze by Sara DeSmet in the second. The Mustangs added three more runs in the third on three hits.
Â
UMD (34-9; 16-4 NSIC) was slow out of the gates with one base hit through the first third innings, a
Kalynn Tilton double to dead center. The Bulldogs got on the board in the fourth after SMSUÂ (11-22; 6-12 NSIC) mishandled a fly ball in right field.
Natalie Wright capitalized on the error and missled one off the glove of the first baseman down the right field line for a two-out two-RBI double to cut the SMSU lead in half.
Â
The Mustangs' pitcher Megan Cull would stifle the Bulldogs from there on. Cull struck out 10, tying her career high to snap the Bulldogs' 11-game winning streak as SMSU won 4-2.
Breanna Swint (16-3) received her first loss in NSIC play and her first in the last 15 decisions.
Â
UMD came out on top in the pitcher's duel 4-1 between junior
Valerie Hohol (14-4) and Athena Golling. In the top of the first, freshman designated player
Jordyn Thomas singled to first base, driving in senior shortstop
Becky Smith, who reached third on a three-bag error in right field. Hentges tied the game on a homer to left in the second.
Â
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead back in the fourth thanks to another Mustang error. Sophomore third baseman
Lauren Oberle reached on a dropped liner by the shortstop and scored from first on a well-executed at-bat by sophomore outfielder
Lauren Greeder. The Stillwater, Minn., native slapped the ball to the left center wall after the infield abandoned their positions playing the faked bat. SMSUÂ had four errors in game two and five on the afternoon.
Thomas drove in two insurance runs after junior outfielder
Sammi Sadler, senior outfielder
Hannah Schmoll and senior
Natalie Wright all bunted to kick off the seventh.
Â
UMD will conclude the four-day road trip with its final road regular season double dip at Bemidji State University on Wednesday. First pitch between the Bulldogs and the Beavers will begin at 2:00 p.m.
