Senior shortstop
Becky Smith smashed her own single-season RBI record this afternoon in the University of Minnesota Duluth's sweep over Bemidji State University. The Long Lake, Minn., native had six RBI on the day, including a base-clearing double in part of a 12-run seventh inning to scatter her 2015 mark of 57. She went 6-for-8 on the day with two doubles, a home run and three runs. Smith, who already owns the club's all-time RBI record, has 60 RBI for the season, which is tops in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and tied for fifth in NCAA Division II. She is now fifth among active leaders with 200 runs driven in.
Smith played only a minor role in the thunderous 12-run seventh inning that lifted the Bulldogs to a 14-2 victory in game two at the BSU Softball Field in Bemidji, Minn. The 12 runs tied a program record for most runs in a inning. The 2014 Bulldogs had 12 runs in the first inning against Lincoln University of Missouri on Feb. 23, 2014.
When it was all said and done, UMD almost batted around the order twice as it racked up 12 hits in the inning.
Sophomore third baseman
Lauren Oberle started the chaotic inning with a single up the middle. After Oberle's single, sophomore outfielder
Jayme Langbehn, junior outfielder
Sammi Sadler and senior
Hannah Schmoll all reached on bunt singles before senior second baseman
Natalie Wright cleared them all with her second grand slam of the season. Two batters later, freshman designated player
Jordyn Thomas also went yard, her 11th on the year. The Bulldogs got the bases loaded again and both Sadler and Wright delivered RBI singles. Finally, Smith stepped in and lifted a ball the the right-center fence for the record.
UMD (36-9; 18-4 NSIC) traded runs with Bemidji State (15-25; 4-14 NSIC) in the first two innings. Thomas collected her first collegiate triple to start off the second game. The Hermantown, Minn., native roped one over the right fielder and one-hopped to the fence scoring Smith from first. Sadler got the second run in on a double.
Junior pitcher
Valerie Hohol improved to 15-4 on the year striking out five and walking three Beavers. Hohol also contributed with a double play on a saving catch on a bunt attempt and throwing out the runner at first.
The Bulldogs, who took the first contest 5-2, ended its regular season road campaign 10-4, and captured their seventh NSIC sweep of the season.
Smith crushed her 10
th homer of the season to start off the double header action. It was a three-run bomb, which gave her a share of the record at the time, to right field to give the Bulldogs the lead. The Beavers got two runs back in the bottom of the inning.
In the sixth, Wright increased the lead back to two on a double to left center, scoring Schmoll, who led off the inning with a triple. Later in the frame, Thomas hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Wright to score and give UMD a 5-2 advantage.
Sophomore pitcher
Breanna Swint picked up her 17
th win of the season after hurling her 15th complete game. The Marysville, Calif., native allowed five base runners and struck out four. Swint retired the last seven batters.
UMD will host Wayne State College and Augustana University this weekend to close out the 2018 regular season. The Bulldogs have an action-packed weekend in store. Saturday will feature raising awareness for the fight against domestic violence in the remembrance of former Bulldog Mandy Matula. In addition, the four to-be graduates will be honored Sunday along with the parents against the No. 13 Vikings on Sunday.
