FORMER BULLDOG BRUCE GRANT SUCCUMBS TO CANCER AT AGE 57

Bruce Grant, a standout quarterback at the University of Minnesota Duluth during the early 1980s, died Tuesday morning after battling brain cancer. He was 57.

A native of Bloomington, Minn., Grant started three years (1981-83) for the Bulldogs and in his final collegiate go around, landed a spot on the All-Northern Intercollegiate Conference first team. He exited the UMD program owning some 15 records including lifetime marks for passing (3,690) and total offense (3,887) yards.

Grant's father, Bud Grant was a legendary Minnesota Vikings head coach, while his nephew, Rick Fritz, enjoyed a record-breaking career of his own as UMD quarterback from 1998-2002. Another nephew, Taylor Grant, played tight end for the Bulldogs for two years (2013-14) and a niece, Kelly Fritz, is a UMD soccer alumna (1995-96) . Bruce's daughter, Natalie, is currently a senior at UMD.

"Bruce was a proud Bulldog and started what turned out to be a strong tradition of the Grant family at UMD," said Rick Fritz. "Among Bruce's fondest memories were the times he played football for UMD head coach Jim Malosky."

A Memorial Service for Bruce Grant will be held on July 31 at 11 a.m. at the Westwood Community Church in Excelsior, Minn., with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
