Buoyed by a defensive unit which allowed a mere field goal, the University of Minnesota Duluth maintained its unbeaten status for 2018 by rolling past Concordia University-St. Paul 32-3 Saturday afternoon at James S. Malosky Stadium.

"I thought our defense once again played a really good football game," said UMD Head Coach Curt Wiese, whose Bulldogs improved to 5-0 on the year.  "They played soundly and were able to create a few key turnovers."

Three turnovers to be exact, two of which (a fumble recovery and an interception) the Bulldogs parlayed into 10 points. That included a field goal with two seconds to go before halftime that gave UMD a somewhat comfortable 19-3 lead.

Sophomore quarterback John Larson furnished the No. 8 Bulldogs with 307 yards of total offense. He completed 20 of 32 passes for 238 yards and one touchdown -- a 10-yard strike to senior tight end Tyler Lattery in the first quarter -- while rushing for a team-leading 69 yards and another score on 15 carries. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Dain Hudson finished with game-high and career-best six pass receptions.

"We knew we were going to face a tough team in Concordia St. Paul," said redshirt freshman running back Wade Sullivan, who capped off the UMD scoring with a six-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown run. "By grinding the ball down the field, we were able to put it in the end zone a couple of times to get the win."

UMD got picks from senior left cornerback Tareq Abulebbeh (his UMD-high third of 2018) and senior strong safety Sam Lynch (his sixth as a Bulldog) en route to taking down Concordia-St. Paul for the seventh consecutive time. The Bulldogs held an advantage in virtually every statistical category in the penalty-filled game,  including total yards (417-240), first downs (27-15), passing yards (250-108),  and rushing yards (167-132). Lynch and junior free safety Bill Atkins led the Bulldogs defensively with five tackles each.

The Bulldogs will face their second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division foe in a row next Saturday (Oct. 6) when they pay a visit to Augustana University.
