Justin Wieck and the University of Minnesota Duluth have posted its share of memorable wins in Wieck's first season as head coach. The Bulldogs scored over 100 points in Wieck's debut. They upset a top-25 team for the first time in three seasons and they captured the club's first road Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference weekend sweep since the 2014-15 season.
That's just naming a few of the accomplishments so far this season.
Tonight, UMD tried to add another milestone victory for Wieck as he squared off against his former team he spent the last four seasons at as an assistant coach.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs will have to wait for the rematch in three weeks.
Minnesota State University Moorhead defeated UMD 79-58 at Romano Gymnasium in NSIC action Friday night. The Dragons propelled their record to 15-6 overall and 9-4 in the NSIC while the Bulldogs sit at 10-7 overall and 7-6 in the NSIC.
MSU Moorhead was handed a 12-0 lead immediately from the opening tip and never looked back as it carried the lead from nearly start to finish. The Dragons pounced at the opportunity and the trio work of Addison Park, Travan Coad and Johnny Beeninga compiled 58 points combined including Park's game-high 22 points from off the bench. MSUM shot 40 percent in the opening half and continued to only get better in the second half. The Dragons missed only nine attempts in the last 20 minutes as they hit on 65 percent to wipe away any comeback possibility by UMD.
The Bulldogs, who did that exact thing last weekend by overcoming a 14-point deficit to Minnesota State University Mankato, struggled out of the gates and never found any offensive flow. The smothering Dragon defense limited the UMD offense that had scored, on average, 87 points in the last five contests. The Bulldogs shot poorly from the field, from three and from the free throw line as there seemed to be a lid on the basket all night. They shot 36 percent from the floor, an underwhelming 16 percent from long distance and just 55 percent from the charity stripe.
UMD knew it had its hands full when its leading scorer was unable to hit his looks. Junior forward
Brandon Myer collected 18 points, 14 rebounds, a career-high five blocks, three assists and two steals but it came at the price of 17 attempts. Myer, who entered the night fifth in the NSIC in scoring, was hindered early on as he opened 1-for-11 and had four points thought the early portion of the second half. The reigning NSIC North Division Player of the Week, found some rhythm late but the Dragons countered with baskets of their own to keep the Bulldogs at a distance. Senior forward
Sean Burns was the only other Bulldog in double figures.
The Bulldogs will attempt to rebound from its tough loss as they are back in action against Northern State University tomorrow at 5:30 p.m.
