Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

BULLDOGS MOW DOWN MAVERICKS AND COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP

For the second time in as many nights, the University of Minnesota Duluth eclipsed the 50-shot plateau and for the second time in as many nights, the end result was a National Collegiate Hockey Conference win.

The No. 5 Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into the third period went on to take down the University of Nebraska-Omaha 3-1 and sweep its second consecutive league series. UMD got goals from three different players, including sophomore right winger Koby Bender, who scored for the first time in 18 career games. Bender's goal, which came midway through the second period, came off a rebound and proved to be the game-winner.  Sophomore defenseman Dylan Samberg's heavy wrister from the right point at 5:24 of the second.  Senior team captain Parker Mackay tacked on some insurance for UMD (16-6-2 overall and 9-4-1-0 in the NCHC) with 3:33 to go in regulation when he took a faceoff feed from sophomore center Justin Richards and went top shelf with a shot for his 11th goal of the season. With the assist, Richards extended his personal scoring streak to a career-high eight games.

At the other end of the ice, Hunter Shepard, the reigning NCHC Goaltender of the Week, was selected the game's No. 1 star after finishing with a season-high 33 saves and allowing but one goal (on the power play 5:48 into the third period). The Bulldogs outshot Omaha (7-15-2; 3-10-1-1 NCHC) 52-34 on the night and 108-51 on the weekend.

"Omaha had a good start and we didn't", said UMD head coach Scott Sandelin. "We didn't handle things too well, but we stayed with our game plan and then got that lead. I like the fact that when they got their power play goal, we didn't panic. We played better the rest of the way and got a big goal from Parker."

UMD will now take its show on the road for a pair of NCHC clashes with Colorado College next Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs prevailed over the Tigers twice earlier this season in Duluth (3-0 and 5-1 on Nov. 9-10).
