The University of Minnesota Duluth went on a 29-9 run in the middle of the second half to grab the lead and eventually pull away from Bemidji State University for a 72-57 take down Friday night in Bemidji, Minn. The Bulldogs, who snapped a three-game losing skid by sweeping St. Cloud State University last Sunday, move one game above .500 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and to 7-4 overall. The Beavers (4-7; 1-6 NSIC) have dropped six in-a-row and haven't won since the NSIC opener.
UMD trailed by four with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game and flipped it to up 16 with 5:07 left off the giant run sparked by junior forward
Brandon Myer and junior guard
Trevor Entwisle. Myer scored 20 of his game-high 29 points in the second half and Entwisle buried three triples in the run.
Bemidji State and UMD never led by more than a single possession for the first half. The Bulldogs took a 34-32 lead to the locker room at half but the Beavers climbed ahead right away to start the second. Trailing 40-37, Myer jumped in front of a Beaver pass on defense and rocked the basket with a one-hand jam. Derek Thompson immediately answered with a three the next possession to give Bemidji State its largest lead of the night.Â
Entwisle replied with his own three from NBA-range and it sweltered into Entwisle and Myer completely rewriting the script of the game. Myer scored five straight points for UMD including a three from the top of the circle. His second three of the half gave UMD the lead 47-45. Entwisle, who finished with 12 points, backed that up with his second three in a span of two minutes. Later, Entwisle drained another three and Myer placed the Bulldogs up by double digits on a pull up jumper with just under 10 minutes left.
The Beavers sliced it in half but the Bulldog cavalry of junior guard
Cody Tomlinson, senior forward
Sean Burns and junior guard
Logan Rohrscheib put the game to rest. Rohrscheib popped the Bulldogs' ninth three-pointer of the night as he gave UMD its biggest lead of 16 points.
The Bulldogs shot 48.1 percent from the floor and a blistering 60 percent, a season-high, from behind the arc.Â
Senior guard
Mamadou Ngom tied a career high with eight rebounds. He also dropped in eight points. Sophomore forward
Jake Paper performed well off the bench. The Fargo, N.D., native had four points, a season-high five rebounds and had a pair of blocks, which tied his collegiate mark.
Ja Morgan led the Beavers with 13 points and Logan Bader had 12 points.
UMD is back on the hardwood tomorrow evening against the University of Minnesota Crookston. That road contest in Crookston, Minn., will begin at 5:30 p.m.
