UPPER IOWA STUNS UMD TO SNAP 12-GAME HOME WIN STREAK

The University of Minnesota Duluth dropped their first-ever game to Upper Iowa University in a 23-13 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference defeat Saturday afternoon at Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulldogs (5-3, 4-0 NSIC North) would get on the board first in the second quarter with a 29-yard field goal from senior placekicker Dan Branger. Redshirt freshman quarterback Keagan Calchera found sophomore running back Wade Sullivan in the flat for a 41-yard catch-and-run to set up the opening score. With just over six minutes remaining in the half, the Peacocks (2-6, 0-4 NSIC South) would answer when running back Matt McDonald burst through the Bulldog defense for a 31-yard touchdown run to give Upper Iowa a 7-3 lead. It would only take three minutes for sophomore running back Zach Ojile and the Bulldog offense to respond. Ojile took the direct snap and raced to the left pylon for a six-yard touchdown to reclaim a 10-7 advantage.

The Peacocks would set the pace in the third quarter when quarterback Zach Reader hit wide receiver Alexander Stevens on a fade route for a 31-yard touchdown. The score would give the Peacocks a 14-10 lead five minutes into the second half. The Bulldogs would attempt to reclaim the lead on their following possession but the drive was halted after a fumble gave Upper Iowa the ball back on their own 29-yard line.

Branger would connect again early in the fourth quarter with a 36-yard field goal to cut Upper Iowa's lead to 14-13. The field goal was set up after the Bulldogs took the ball over on downs when Upper Iowa punter Jonathon Argueta-Herrera's knee hit the ground before punting away. The mishap gave UMD possession on the Peacock 24-yard line. The Bulldogs bid to reclaim the lead with 7:41 remaining would be denied by the left upright when Branger missed a 31-yard field goal from the right hash. The Bulldog offense failed to convert with first-and-goal to go on the Peacock 10-yard line. On their ensuing possession, the Peacocks would be held to a 21-yard field goal after senior defensive back Bill Atkins deflected Reader's pass on third-and-goal from the four-yard line. The field goal would extend Upper Iowa's lead to 17-13 with 3:14 remaining. Upper Iowa defensive back CJ Scott would shut the door on UMD's 12-game home regular-season winning streak when he picked off Olson's 3rd-and-22 pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. The pick-six gave the Peacocks a 23-13 lead with less than two minutes remaining.
