The University of Minnesota Duluth University used 16 made three-pointers to take down the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 89-69 for the their third straight win Wednesday night at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth, Minn.
Senior guard Logan Rohrscheib and reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week, senior forward Alex Illikainen got the Bulldog offense going Wednesday night, converting on a pair of three-pointers to give UMD an early 6-5 advantage. Rohrsheib added his second triple of the game five minutes into the half, this time from the left corner. With nine minutes remaining in the first half, Illikainen faked out his defender and then proceeded to hit UMD's sixth triple of the half to give the Bulldogs (4-1 overall) a 24-17 advantage. The Bulldogs would connect on nine threes while shooting 60% from beyond the arc in the first half. Illikainen connected again on the very next possession for his fourth three-pointer, this one from the right-wing. The Bulldogs would keep building on their first-half advantage: with five-and-a-half minutes remaining, senior forward Brady Myer sliced his way through the Ranger defense twice for a pair of lay-ins to push UMD's lead up to 14 points, their largest of the game so far. A 10-0 run, that took just under two-and-a-half minutes, from UW-Parkside (2-3 overall) would bring the Rangers back to within four points with 2:52 remaining in the half. Myer put an end to that run with a three of his own and would add a lay-in off an inbound play to give UMD a 43-37 lead at the break.
Rohrscheib used the backboard to find his third three of the game and give UMD a 48-41 lead early in the second half. Rohrscheib would stay hot, connecting on two more threes, including one from about 25-feet to push UMD's lead to 56-43. Rohrshieb's sixth three capped off the 13-4 run for the Bulldogs that spanned 4:33. The Bulldogs also got defensive in the second half, Meyer picked off a Ranger pass for his third steal of the game, which he converted into a one-handed slam on the other end. A couple minutes later, Rohrscheib intercepted another Ranger pass and turned it into an easy left-handed lay-in to give UMD a 74-55 lead. With under a minute remaining, senior guard Cody Tomlinson put the finishing touches on the 20-point victory with a 10-foot, pull-up jumper for his first points of the season.
