BULLDOGS SHUT DOWN MINOT STATE FOR SIXTH CONSECUTIVE VICTORY

The University of Minnesota Duluth took down Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Minot State University en route to their sixth straight victory with a 72-54 triumph at Romano Gymnasium Friday night in Duluth, Minn.

In a battle of 6-1 ball clubs, UMD used a hot start from senior forward Brandon Myer, who's nine early points helped give the Bulldogs a 12-3 lead five minutes into the game. The Bulldogs (2-0 NSIC; 7-1 overall) landed in the bonus at the 11:49 mark of the first half, extending their early advantage to 13 points on two free throws from senior forward Alex Illikainen. A minute later, senior guard Logan Rohrscheib added a three-pointer from the right-wing to give the Bulldogs a 21-5 lead. Navigating his through the Minot State (0-2 NSIC; 6-2 overall) defense for a right-handed lay-in, Rohrscheib would extend UMD's first-half lead to 20 points at 34-14. Rohrscheib added another bucket and a free throw in the final minute of the first half to give the Bulldogs a 41-16 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs continued to hold Minot State at bay in the second half, maintaining a 15+ point advantage for the entire final 20 minutes. A 7-0 run with five minutes remaining for the Beavers helped Minot State to within 20 points of the Bulldog lead but it was too little too late in their attempt to snap UMD's five-game winning streak. A reverse lay-in in the final minute of the game from sophomore guard Mason Steffen capped UMD's second NSIC victory of the season.
