UMD TAKES DOWN WAYNE STATE 77-72

Two weeks ago, the University of Minnesota Duluth upset Northern State University, the leaders of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division. Tonight, the Bulldogs knocked off the other divisional leader.

UMD came away with a 77-72 victory over Wayne State College for its third straight victory. The Bulldogs (14-8; 11-7 NSIC) took the lead in the second half and held off a late rally from the Wildcats (17-7; 12-6 NSIC) to complete the road weekend sweep. The Bulldogs got defensive in the second half as Wayne State, who shot 56 percent in the first 20 minutes, made only nine baskets and shot just 27 percent to close out the game. UMD stayed the course on the offensive end and finishing with a 51 percent shooting percentage.

The Wildcats didn't go down easy as they fought back and had the game within four points. Wayne State trailed by 11 with 93 second left and quickly went on a 10-3 blitz in less than a minute. The Bulldogs weren't going to be denied as senior forward Ryan Kaczynski stepped up in the biggest moment of the game.

Literally.

Kaczynski stepped in and took a charge to silence the Wildcat comeback bid. UMD stayed true to its road tenacity and sealed the deal at the line for its eighth road win of the season, the most by the program since the 1996-97 season.

Fellow senior Sean Burns was a monster once again in the interior. Burns went 10-for-14 from the field for a team-high 22 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Junior forward Brandon Myer reached double-doubles for the ninth time with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Hunter Plamann had 14 points and went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe.

UMD remains on the road with Northern State University up next on Friday, Feb. 8 in Aberdeen, S.D.
