The University of Minnesota Duluth closed the books on its season-opening seven-day stay in Florida Wednesday afternoon by falling 6-1 to Wayne State University.
The Bulldogs, now 2-5 on the year, went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first, on senior first baseman
Tyler Wojciechowski's sacrifice fly to left field that brought home senior lead-off hitter
Cory Krolikowski. Junior right fielder
Drew Stewart doubled during that same inning and added a single later in the game to account for two of UMD's six hits on the day.Â
Wayne State (13-3) took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the second and added two more in the fourth. The Wildcats pounded out 11 hits and got a complete game from Dillon McInerny, who struck out 12 while walking just one.
UMD freshman
Aaron Wukmir made his first collegiate pitching start and went four innings, allowing just one earned run and three hits. Fellow rookie
Ben Shepard threw the next three innings and was equally as effective (no earned runs and four hits with four strikeouts).
The Bulldogs are scheduled to open NSIC play this weekend (March 16-17) with a pair of doubleheaders at Upper Iowa University.
