UMD BATS COME ALIVE TO TAKE TWO ON THURSDAY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The University of Minnesota Duluth improved to 6-7 overall after taking both games of its non-conference double header Thursday afternoon in Clermont, Fla. The Bulldogs' offense erupted to defeat Merrimack College 9-1 in six innings and Purdue University Northwest 6-1.

UMD launched four home runs total and continued its winning ways in the Sunshine State as it is 46-10 in the College Spring Games. It has won 12 of the last 13 games played in Florida.

It was a seven-run six inning that carried the Bulldogs in the win over Warriors. Everyone got involved as UMD blasted nine hits with eight different hitters registering a hit. Sophomore infielder Jordyn Thomas, who leads the team in a bevy of offensive categories thus far, provided an examination point to the Bulldogs' giant inning. Thomas cleared the bases on her triple down the right field line.

Junior infielder Lauren Oberle, senior outfielder Kalynn Tilton and freshman infielder Emma Frost set the foundation in the sixth which featured three walks and four hits in the inning alone. Oberle and Tilton each walked while Frost, who collected multiple hits, pounded a single back up the middle. Freshman outfielder Erin Thompson drove in her first two collegiate runs on a hit to left. Junior Lexi Janigo provided a pinch-hit single to reload the bases eventually paving way for Thomas' rope to the right field fence.

Oberle got the bats clicking in the second inning as she deposited her 18th collegiate home run – a no-doubter – over the left-field wall to give UMD a 2-0 head start.

Freshman right-hander Sam Pederson did her part for her fourth victory of the season. She hurled all six innings for her second straight win giving up just the one run while scattering four hits and four walks.

The Bulldogs received another solid pitching performance from junior Breanna Swint, who took the circle in the second game and spun a masterful one. Swint (2-5) locked down Lions, allowing only one run on four hits and one walk. She handed out a pair of strikeouts as well.

Thomas, Thompson and Frost all jacked long bombs in the 6-1 decision. Leading 1-0 in the fourth, Thomas and Thomspon took starting pitcher Mia Stevens deep on back-to-back pitches to the identical part of center field. For Thompson, it was her first collegiate bomb as she rewarded head coach Jen Walter for placing her fifth in the lineup. Frost placed the game out of reach in sixth with her homer to left field. The Farmington, Minn., native took the first pitch and then parked the next one over the fence for a three-run shot, her second homer of the year.

UMD returns Saturday to take on No. 22 Southern New Hampshire University and Northwood University. First pitch is slated for 8:15 a.m. against SNHU and 12:30 p.m. against NU.
