BULLDOGS SPLIT WITH MOCCASINS ON FINAL DAY OF FLORIDA TRIP

One bad inning potentially spoiled a double header sweep on Tuesday. That opening inning didn't deter the University of Minnesota Duluth as it salvaged a split against Florida Southern College, losing the first game 7-2 before battling back to conquer a 3-2 win on the back end of its double header with the Moccasins in Lakeland, Fla.

The Bulldogs concluded its non-conference slate with a 9-10 record as well as its six-day, 10-game business trip in Florida this afternoon.

Florida Southern took the front end of the double header as it scored all seven of its runs in the first inning. The Moccasins converted time after time after UMD missed out on a pickoff attempt and failed to cover bunt for an easy single. Junior outfielder Lauren Greeder and senior infielder Kalynn Tilton each gathered two hits while junior infielder Lauren Oberle got the Bulldogs on the board in the top of the first with a single to left field. Later, Tilton plated sophomore infielder Jordyn Thomas with a double in the fourth.

Aubrey Ehlers pitched six strong innings for the win, allowing seven hits in total to the Bulldogs while picking up three strikeouts. Freshman Sam Pederson was dealt the loss after being pulled after one inning of work.

While Pederson had a tough go in the circle, junior pitcher Breanna Swint was money. Swint threw straight 12 innings allowing two runs -- no earned – as she shut down the Moccasins. The Marysville, Calif., native surrendered six hits and three walks including a four-hitter in the Bulldogs' 3-2 win in game two.

UMD trailed 2-0 after the second inning but that all changed in the third. Senior outfielder Sammi Sadler beat out an infield single and sophomore Jessica Bren reached on error to put runners at first and second. Sophomore infielder Taylor Koehnen tied the game on a triple down the left-field line. Freshman Erin Thompson delivered the go-ahead run, scoring Koehnen, the following at-bat with a single to left.

UMD will make its 2019 home opener on March 26 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference double header against St. Cloud State University. First pitch of that conference opener is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. at James S. Malosky Stadium.
