BULLDOGS DROP PAIR OF HOME ASSIGNMENTS TO CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL

For the second day in a row, Concordia University-St. Paul swept the University of Minnesota Duluth (9-2 and 6-3) in a pair of home games at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior, Wis.

Despite racking up 10 hits in the opener (a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game), the Bulldogs were only able to push across two runs and left 11 runners on base. UMD scored both of their runs in the first inning on base hits from senior first baseman Tyler Wojciechowski and rookie shortstop McCale Peterson, which drove in sophomore center fielder Henry George and junior right fielder Drew Stewart. Wojciechowski (2-for-4), George (3-for-5), and Peterson (2-for-4) paced the Bulldogs' offensive attack. UMD rookie pitcher Ben Shepard (0-1) gave up seven runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings of work in his second start of the season. Sophomore pitcher Wyatt O'Bey tossed the final five innings of the game and allowed two runs on four hits while fanning two, but walking five Golden Bears.

In the non-conference rematch, the Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning when senior left fielder Cory Krolikowski advanced home on a throwing error. Junior right fielder Drew Stewart, who reached on that throwing miscue, gotcaught stealing second base during the next at-bat to end the frame for the Bulldogs. Concordia-St. Paul would answer in the next inning, plating two runs to grab the lead and would put four more runs up in the fifth inning to push their lead to 6-1. The Bulldogs (4-16 overall; 2-9 in the NSIC), who lost for the 11th straight time, would tally two more runs in the seventh, and final, inning when rookie center fielder Tim Pokornowski ripped a two-run double to left center, scoring both Krolikowski and rookie second baseman Frankie Cistaro. Junior pitcher Jaylen Hakes (0-2), in his third starting assignment of the 2019 campaign, gave up six runs on seven hits while striking out season-high five batters and giving up four walks in 4.1 innings. Sophomore Paul Petit and Tim Porkornowski each pitched in relief for the Bulldogs, holding the Golden Bears scoreless over the final 2.2 innings.

The Bulldogs will continue their 12-game home stand tomorrow (April 2) with a NSIC doubleheader with Minnesota State University-Mankato beginning at 10:00 a.m. at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
