Veteran University of Minnesota Duluth bench boss
Scott Sandelin is one of 10 finalists for the American Hockey Coaches Association's Spencer Penrose Award, which is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Coach of the Year.
Sandelin, who was the recipient of this prestigious award in 2004, the runnerup seven years ago and a finalist in each of the past two winters, has directed UMD to its seventh overall berth in the NCAA Frozen Four (and program-record third in a row) and last month saw his troops secure their second National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoff championship in the past three years. The Bulldogs are currently 27-11-2 overall, marking the eighth time in the past 11 seasons they have eclipsed the 20-win plateau. Now winding down his 19th season behind the Bulldog bench, Sandelin is UMD's all-time leader in coaching victories (he's 367-311-87 overall) and also sports the best NCAA Tournament winning percentage (.760 off a 19-6 record) of any active head coach.
The Spencer Penrose Award voting will be conducted prior to next week's NCAA Frozen Four in Buffalo, N.Y., and the winner will be announced on April 10.
