The University of Minnesota Duluth wrapped up its six-game road stand with a sweep on Wednesday afternoon, taking down the University of Minnesota Crookston 5-1 and 12-1 in five innings at the UMC Softball Field in Crookston, Minn.
The Bulldogs, who are now a perfect 31-0 against the Golden Eagles since the two teams first started competing back since the turn of the century, move their record to 15-12 overall and 6-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Minnesota Crookston, which has dropped nine of the last 11, is now 12-20 on the season and 1-7 in league play.
Sophomore infielder
Jordyn Thomas busted the opener wide open with her team-leading fifth homer of the season. Tied at one in the fourth, Thomas swung at a 3-2 pitch and deposited it over the centerfielder into the snowbank.
Junior infielder
Lauren Oberle drove in the other two runs for the Bulldogs in the first game. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native had an RBI single in the first and added another in the sixth. Oberle, who collected three hits, had the game-ending double play as she used her range to sprawl out to make a diving catch and double-up the runner off second with the bases loaded.
Freshman infielder
Emma Frost, along with Thomas, had two of the seven Bulldog hits in the opener.
Freshman starting pitcher
Sam Pederson nabbed her eighth win going six-plus innings, allowing the one run. Pederson gave up a solo home run to Rocky Bjorge in the bottom of the first before settling in until running into trouble in the final inning. Junior pitcher
Breanna Swint defused the base-loaded threat, however, striking out Bjorge for the first out then finished the game for her first save of 2019 with Oberle's heroic diving double play.
Swint dazzled in the nightcap for her seventh victory as she threw a one-hitter allowing one run that scored thanks to a three-bag throwing error. The Marysville, Calif., native faced only 20 batters and struck out three.
Minnesota Crookston fell into an early hole in the second game. A total of six errors allowed UMD to fire up its offense and capitalize on the extra at-bats it was given. Freshman outfielder
Erin Thompson, who tabbed two hits on the afternoon, doubled with one out in the second and scored on an error in left field. The Golden Eagles allowed three more in the third. Frost had a two-RBI double and Thompson backed that up with an RBI single to increase the Bulldog lead to 4-0.Â
Junior outfielder
Jayme Langbehn had the loudest hit of the afternoon as she lifted a solo bomb to deep left finding the tall Evergreens. The Bulldogs fed off that monumental moonshot and scored seven times in the fifth capped by a pair of two-runs doubles by Oberle and senior outfielder
Kalynn Tilton.
The Bulldogs make their return to the diamond on Friday as they host Minot State University at James S. Malosky Stadium for a NSIC double header starting at 12:00 p.m.
