Box Score 2 The University of Minnesota Duluth concluded the road portion of its 2019 schedule Tuesday by trading Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victories with the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Bulldogs prevailed 1-0 in the front end of the doubleheader before falling 14-4 later in the afternoon.
In the opener (UMD's first 1-0 shutout victory since April 19, 2017), three Bulldogs combined on a four-hitter en route to snapping a six-game losing skid. Senior
Nick Dorfman got the start -- his sixth of the season -- and allowed just two hits and fanned three over three innings before giving way to
Paul Petit. The sophomore righthander retired all six batters he faced, striking out three of them while posting his first collegiate win (and first decision in 16 lifetime appearances). Sophomore
Liam Blaschko worked the final two innings, giving up a pair of hits to go with three punchouts to secure his first save as a Bulldog.
The Bulldogs' only run came in the top of the fourth inning when, with two outs, sophomore right fielder
Drew Stewart scored on an error. Both rookie shortstop
McCale Peterson and senior left fielder
Cory Krolikowski went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs, who finished with seven hits against Minnesota Crookston southpaw Nate Albrecht in his complete game setback.
UMD (13-33 overall, 10-13 NSIC) took a 1-0 lead in its first at bats in Game 2 only to see the Golden Eagles answer with five runs in the bottom of the first. A three-run homer -- his team-leading sixth of the season -- by senior designated hitter
Tyler Wojciechowski in the fourth inning cut the Minnesota Crookston lead to 5-4, but again the home club had an answer as they put up a four spot in the bottom of the fourth and then added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to cap off the non-conference win that was called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
Stewart and freshman first baseman
Tosten Mann each went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs, who outhit the Golden Eagles 9-7.
UMD will host Bemidji State University in a pair of doubleheaders this Friday and Saturday (May 3-4) at Bulldog Park in its 2019 season finales.
