NO. 13 UMD HOLDS OFF ST. CLOUD TO HOLD ON TO 'THE BONE' ON MILITARY NIGHT

DULUTH, Minn. -- For the seventh consecutive season, the No. 13-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth football program took down St. Cloud State University, holding off the Huskies 20-14 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup Saturday night at Malosky Stadium.

After a nearly hour-long lightning delay and a scoreless first quarter, sophomore tight end Kurtis Weigand found the end zone on a two-yard pass from junior quarterback John Larson. The opening score of the game capped off a 9-play, 63-yard drive that lasted 3:50. Later in the quarter, senior place kicker Dan Branger drilled a 27-yard field goal from the left hash to give no. 13 UMD (3-0, 3-0 NSIC North) a 10-0 halftime advantage.

The game would open up in the third quarter with sophomore running back Zach Ojile punching the ball in from the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal to push the lead to 17-0. The Bulldogs initially settled for three points on the drive thanks to a 24-yard field goal from Branger but a running-into-the-kicker penalty gave UMD a first-and-goal on the 4-yard line. St. Cloud State (RV, 2-1, 2-1 NSIC North) would answer on their ensuing drive when Dwayne Lawhorn hit Max Plunkett on a slant route in the back of the endzone to cut the UMD lead to 17-7.

In the fourth, Branger connected again, this time from the right hash on a 32-yarder to extend the Bulldog lead to 13 points. The Huskies would not go down quietly. With 3:32 remaining in the game, Lawhorn hit wide receiver Tanner Tiege on fourth-and-goal for a touchdown to cut their deficit to 20-14. The Bulldogs would convert on third-and-nine from their own 36-yard line when a Husky linebacker tipped Larson's pass back into junior wide receiver Quincy Woods' hands to get the game-winning first down. Larson finished the game passing 13-for-33 for 140 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Larson also lead the Bulldog rushing attack by picking up 37 yards on 19 carries. Weigand and Woods led all Bulldog receivers with four receptions each. Weigand picked up 38 yards and a touchdown and Woods racked up 37 yards.

NOTABLE
Head coach Curt Wiese has yet to fall against St. Cloud State in his career (7-0) … the Bulldog defense came up big with three key turnovers including interceptions from junior defensive back Michael Kirkendoll and freshman linebacker Logan Eiden, and a fumble recovery from sophomore linebacker Cole Refsnider ... UMD also picked up sacks from junior defensive linemen Dan Monson, junior linebacker Nate Pearson, and junior defensive linemen Paxton Woods ... the Bulldogs are 3-0 since "The Battle of the Bone" was first coined ahead of the 2017 season.

UP NEXT
No. 13 UMD heads back out on the road for the next two weeks beginning next Saturday, Sept. 28 at Chet Anderson Stadium to take on Bemidji State University (3-0, 3-0 NSIC North).
