NO. 13 UMD SOARS PAST BEMIDJI STATE ON 42 UNANSWERED POINTS

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth football program once again made the necessary halftime adjustments and pulled away from Bemidji State University for an eventual 42-7 rout for the top of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's North Division on Saturday afternoon.

After Bemidji State (3-1, 3-1 NSIC North) scored on the game's opening drive, the two defenses took over with three first-quarter punts and an unsuccessful fourth down rushing attempt by the Bulldogs. No. 13 UMD (4-0, 4-0 NSIC North) took advantage of a late first-half turnover by the Beavers as John Larson connected with Dain Hudson on a 34-yard strike to knot the game at 7-7 after a successful kick by Dan Branger.

The two teams took the tie to the locker room, combining for fewer than 200 yards in the first half with the Bulldogs holding a slight 103-94 advantage in the defensive deadlock.

Despite turning over the ball on downs on the opening drive of the third quarter, UMD turned the momentum in its favor out of the locker room, scoring 42 unanswered points over the final 33:10 to turn the game into a laugher. Javien Versey blocked a punt and scored from the Bemidji State 41-yard line, but the Bulldogs lit up the scoreboard with three scores of 75+ yards in the game - a third-quarter 79-yard flea-flicker from Larson to sophomore wideout Armani Carmickle, a 76-yard interception return by senior Bill Atkins, and a 77-yard rush from junior tailback Cazz Martin.

Sophomore running back Zach Ojile joined in on the scoring with a 39-yard scamper in the fourth. Each of UMD's second-half scoring drives were four or fewer plays, including a pair of two-play drives that resulted in points for the road team.

NOTABLE
