The winning streak may be over, but the unbeaten run continues.
The University of Minnesota Duluth rallied for a pair of third-period goals to salvage a 3-3 overtime tie with Western Michigan University Saturday at AMSOIL Arena. The No. 9 Bulldogs, who came into the evening sporting a five-game winning streak after throttling the Broncos 6-3 on Friday in the series opener, are now 12-6-2 overall and 7-1-2-0 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
Western Michigan picked up the extra NCHC point by winning the sudden death shootout after the two clubs settled nothing in the extra 3-on-3 overtime.
Western Michigan (7-9-4 overall; 3-5-2-2 in the NCHC) took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission before junior center
Justin Richards got the Bulldogs on the board 1:22 into the second period when he took a feed from sophomore right winger
Cole Koepke and one-timed a shot in for his seventh goal of the season. The Broncos struck twice later in that same period with the second tally coming with only 1.2 seconds to go. UMD, which scored three unanswered goals in Friday night's triumph, cut the Western Michigan lead to 3-2 at the 9:11 mark of the third on
Tanner Laderoute's goal off a rebound. A little less than three minutes later, two-time All-American junior defenseman
Scott Perunovich got the equalizer on a wraparound that beat Western Michigan goaltender Ben Blacker. Perunovich, the nation's No. 2 scoring blueliner, and Richards, each turned in two-point nights.
Western Michigan outshot the Bulldogs 7-1 in the five-minute overtime and 44-35 in the game as UMD All-American senior netminder
Hunter Shepard racked up 41 saves. That equaled his previous career high which he set against Dartmouth College on Dec. 30, 2017. Both teams went 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Bulldogs, unbeaten in 27 of their last 28 overtime games (13-1-14), have not won a NCHCÂ 3-on-3 overtime since Jan. 6, 2017 and a NCHC shootout since Feb. 3, 2016.
"This group doesn't quit and they showed that tonight," said UMD Head Coach
Scott Sandelin. "Scotty (Perunovich) got a big goal for us and created some other chances. It was a wide-open game with a lot of entertainment. It was a hard-earned point and a good weekend. Not a great weekend, but a good weekend."Â
The Bulldogs will pay a visit to St. Cloud State University for a pair of NCHC bouts next Friday and Saturday night.Â
