Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

BULLDOGS COME UP EMPTY AT ST. CLOUD STATE

On Nov. 5, 2016, the University of Minnesota Duluth took down St. Cloud State University 5-3 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. That completed the third series sweep in a row for the Bulldogs in St. Cloud, Minn., as well as extend UMD's program-record road winning streak against the Huskies to six games.

Since then, however, it's the Huskies who have had the Bulldogs' number in the Granite City.

Saturday afternoon, St. Cloud State did something no other club has done since last February -- hold the Bulldogs scoreless -- as the hosts potted a pair of late third-period goals and downed their intrastate rivals 2-0.  The Huskies, who squeeked out a 2-1 triumph in the series opener on Friday night, have now reeled off six straight wins over the Bulldogs in St. Cloud and became the first NCHC team to sweep UMD since they did so  March 8-9, 2019 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

St. Cloud State broke a 0-0 deadlock with a goal at 18:25 of the third period and then added an empty netter one minute later.

The No. 8 Bulldogs, who held a slight 27-26 edge in shots Sunday, were unable to solve St. Cloud State netminder David Hrenak for the final 104:47 of the weekend. His UMD counterpart, senior All-American Hunter Shepard, certainly deserved a better fate as he gave up just three goals on 48 shots in the twin setbacks. Saturday was Shepard's 103rd consecutive start, one shy of the NCAA record.

"Tonight I thought our team played a better game," said UMD Head Coach Scott Sandlein. "It was just one of those games where not a lot was going on and there wasn't a lot of room on the rink --  but you're going to be in games like those."

UMD (12-8-2 overall and 7-3-2-0 in the NCHC) will return to AMSOIL Arena this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 24-25) to host the University of North Dakota.
