OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey program continues to be hot in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Pod. The Bulldogs picked up their fourth consecutive win on the season over Miami University, 4-2, and now ride a nine game win streak dating back to last season.
Freshman goalie
Zach Stejskal was between the pipes, securing his first collegiate win.
"Again, a hard fought game. They came at us," said head coach
Scott Sandelin. "I thought it was a disjointed game. A lot of power plays, a lot of special teams. There wasn't a lot of flow in some parts of the game, but we found a way to win again and happy for Zach to get his first win so that's good for us."
Miami opened up scoring Tuesday evening just 2:03 into the game when the Redhawks dumped the puck into the UMD zone and freshman goalie
Zach Stejskal played the puck. A miscommunication between Stejskal and senior defenseman
Matt Cairns resulted in the puck popping out in front of the net. Miami forward Chase Pletzke pounced and netted the first goal of the game. The Bulldogs went into the locker room down 1-0 and were outshot 9-7.
UMD tied the game at one apiece 6:58 into the second period when junior forward
Tanner Laderoute potted his first goal of the season. Laderoute scored after freshman defenseman
Wyatt Kaiser threw a puck towards the front of the Miami net, where Laderoute was able to deflect it in. The Bulldogs took the lead less than a minute later on the power play. It was Kaiser again that threw a puck towards the front of the net, allowing junior forward
Noah Cates to tip it down and past Redhawks goalie, Ludvig Persson. UMD carried a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Miami knotted things at two when they scored 2:40 into the third period after Redhawks forward Matthew Barbolini shot a puck from the side wall to the front of the net. The puck bounced off Kaiser from an odd angle and got past a surprised Stejskal. The Bulldogs dug deep and took back the lead with just over three minutes to play. Senior forward
Kobe Roth scored his fifth goal of the year when Cairns rifled the puck towards the front of the net. Roth tipped the puck between the legs of Persson to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. Senior forward
Nick Swaney sealed the deal on an empty net goal with 1:02 remaining in the game.
"Great to get that win, but we're never satisfied. We could kind of clean up but thought we got better from Sunday," said junior captain
Noah Cates. "We're just looking to get better every day and from every game."
Roth finished with the game winning goal, his second of the season. Swaney finished with three points on the evening (1g, 2a). Kaiser finished with two primary assists and one blocked shot. N. Cates and Laderoute each finished with a goal. Stejskal finished the night with 23 saves on 25 shots. The Bulldogs finished the night with 35 shots on goal.
UMD will hit the ice again on Thursday, Dec. 10, in a top-3 tilt against No. 1 North Dakota at 7:35pm.
